  • Abstract
The authors describe linear block code (especially Reed-Solomon code) performance degradation on correlated Rayleigh and Rician fading channels analytically, using generalized Lauguerre polynomials. It is possible to avoid performance degradation by using finite-depth interleaving and error structure in the decoding process. An error/erasure decoder cooperating with the interleaver and hidden Markov modeler (DIHMC) uses error structure in the decoding process to enhance code performance. Simulation are presented, showing nearly 2-dB coding gain compared to pure error decoding on correlated Rayleigh and Rician fading channels whose underlying Gaussian process is highly correlated first-order Markov. Experimental results for DIHMC on the differential Global Positioning System satellite channel are also presented
