Abstract :
Wireless LAN "hot spots" that provide high-speed connectivity are becoming increasingly popular in public places. However, because of the shared nature of the wireless medium and limited spectrum, the addition of new access points does not proportionately scale the total system capacity. In this paper, we first perform a set of measurements and ns-2 simulations to verify that the total throughput that can be significantly degraded due to both interference and contention. We then model the effects of channel overlap for current systems and show that they have severe scaling limitations.
