Abstract
This paper presents the comparative performance of radial basis function network (RBFN) and fuzzy logic controlled voltage source converters (VSC) based static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) in terms of increase in power handling capacity of the line, improvements in transient stability and damping of oscillations in the single machine infinite bus system (SMIB) and multi-machine system. The PI, RBFN and fuzzy logic based controllers are designed to coordinate local measurable control inputs to STATCOM. The damping schemes namely,(i) power oscillation damping (POD) control, and (ii)conventional power system stabilizer (PSS) are tuned to coordinate with proposed controllers for further improvement in damping performance of the system .The coordinated action of POD & PSS are included in simulation. The results indicate that the proposed intelligent controllers are capable of exploring advantageous feature of STATCOM.
