Abstract :
A definition of personal communication systems (PCS) is offered. It is noted that PCS is becoming a generic term for a variety of technological propositions promising communication accessibility from anywhere through a locator number. It is suggested that acceptance and growth of any of these proposed new investments in infrastructure will occur as users find applications of value to them personally. Simply extending mobile voice service through PCS technologies will drive some additional volume only as it is competitive with alternatives. The real growth will occur as the capabilities of PCS are applied against new uses by new classes of users. A discussion of lessons from previous waves of change is followed by an assessment of where new applications which can leverage PCS capabilities will likely be found
