Abstract :
Surface modification of magnesium alloy by laser shot peening (LSP) was studied, and the strengthening effect of two kinds of wrought magnesium alloys AZ31B and ZK60 treated by LSP was compared. Firstly, based on numerical simulation, the distribution of residual stress and the surface plastic deformation in the shot region were analyzed by using ABAQUS software. Then according to laser parameters used in the numerical simulation, the strengthening effect of LSP on the two magnesium alloys was studied experimentally. Results indicated that the greater compressive residual stress and micro-hardness could be obtained for high intensity material than that of low intensity material, but plastic deformation degree of the former is lower than that of the latter. The good agreement between the simulation results and the experimental ones indicated that the numerical analysis method is an available approach for studying LSP process.
