Abstract :
The author discusses the application of counterweight safeties, electrical dynamic braking, and a pneumatic rope brake system to single-rope mine hoists. He considers the control, design, and testing of a suspension rope brake applied to a single-rope mine hoist. The rope brake grips the suspension ropes and stops the hoist if an overspeed of 15% is detected of if the cage moves away from the landing when it is not under control of the hoist motor. Problems with accelerated rope brake lining wear and excessive suspension rope lubrication are addressed. The dynamic performance is compared to that of rope brake installations on multiple-rope hoisting systems.<>
