Abstract :
In 1996, when Keio University acquired the Gutenberg Bible, the Humanities Media Interface (HUMI) project was launched to digitize historic books. Intended to pave the way for a planned digital research library, HUMI is an inter-faculty initiative with several sub-projects. One of the HUMI´s main tasks has been to establish a safe and effective method for the digitization of old, fragile books. Starting with the digitization of the Gutenberg Bibles at Keio in 1997 and at Cambridge University in 1998, the HUMI project has actively pursued cooperative ventures with research libraries and museums abroad. Following the collaborative digitisation of the Gutenberg Bibles in the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz in 1999 and in the British Library in March 2000, HUMI has promoted the inter-library exchange of digital images of historic books
