  • Abstract
PM Transverse Flux Machines (PMTFMs) can achieve higher torque densities than conventional PM Longitudinal Flux Machines (PMLFMs). Unfortunately, controlling PMTFMs is usually quite complex. This is a key reason why this type of machine is hardly used for practical applications till now. The paper describes design rules which finally allow hybrid flux conduction inside the machine. By this, the effort for controlling PMTFMs can be reduced significantly. In order to prove the advantage of the presented method, a complete prototype of the resulting machine design was put into operation with a conventional field-oriented control. The drive´s control behavior during dynamic operation and field weakening was assessed and documented.
