SomaVision: integrated radiotherapy treatment planning contouring and field setup workstation

Presents the architecture of a radiotherapy contouring and field setup workstation as part of the information infrastructure of an oncological department. The workstation is based on a hospital information system expanded for image data and it can share oncological information with other applications. We propose a layered software architecture for constructing medical visualization and modeling applications with a focus on code reusability and data integration. The use of a high-speed LAN, relational database and advanced visualization, together with the support of the information system contributes to all parts of the radiotherapy treatment process. We also show that integration improves the safety of treatments, simplifies the maintainability of data, and mitigates the problems of isolated oncological information
