Abstract :
Summary form only given. This paper demonstrates the history and the present state of information technology in Egypt. It also analyses the active role played by the government since 1985 causing a change in the role of information technology in the society as an important tool in targeting socio-economic development and improving the decision making process. This investigation shows the availability of advanced and state of the art information technologies and their uses for various purposes both entrepreneurial and developmental. The birth and development of information technology in Egypt at the corporate and government levels is demonstrated through its various phases and reaching its current phase where nationally organized efforts in terms of human capacity build-up, technological infrastructure establishment and financial support were formulated to embark on a comprehensive program to support socioeconomic development in Egypt
