Abstract :
Presents a knowledge-based VLSI design system CHARM (chip architecture maker), which starts with a high-level algorithmic behavioral description of the problem and produces a nontopological chip-architecture plan. Attention is given to the motivation for this approach, a description of the method, the structure of the tool and its environment, the architecture of the expert system, type of knowledge and representation, and problem-solving strategies. Finally, implementation notes and an example are given.<>
