Abstract :
A 3D ray optical approach for the prediction of long distance microwave communication performance is presented. It takes into account scattering and diffraction in the vertical transmitter-receiver plane, and in addition rough surface scattering in the real 3D terrain. The influence of the inhomogeneous troposphere is modeled by a ray-tracing algorithm. Although similar ray optical models are widely used and give reasonable results under several circumstances, the paper summarizes all relevant limitations of the algorithms in use.
