Surface defect and texture identification in construction materials

This paper describes an investigation into the assessment of inconsistencies in texture of concrete materials, using image processing. This work is being carried out in collaboration with a major manufacturer of construction materials. The materials should have a fairly rough but uniform surface. Rejected samples exhibiting surface openness and cracks respectively, are shown. Texture assessment is complicated by the fact that the materials are a random mix of several different colours
