Abstract
Summary form only given. Looking through my word processor files I found that I have authored 15 papers and numerous PowerPoint presentations and tutorials that include the words software defined radio or SDR somewhere in the title. One would think that I would have some understanding of what is a software defined radio. One would think that wouldnpsilat one? SDR has proven to be a many faceted creature. Participating in various SDR related activities has led me to understand that SDR is many things to many people and that the beauty of the beast is found in the eye of the beholder. These eyes see SDR as a wonderful opportunity to practice digital signal processing magic in the communications area. This talk will emphasize SDR activity near the physical layer of a communication system but will pay appropriate homage to higher level tasks and activities that enable the deployment of SDR systems. We will comment on a number of successful SDR systems.
