Abstract :
A new wavelet-based approach to rain patterns detection from weather-radar data is proposed. The approach exploits the physical characteristics of rainfall fields to obtain a refined description of these patterns at different scales. The detection procedure is based on a wavelet packet algorithm, followed by an intelligent strategy for multiband analysis. To provide a validation, the procedure is also compared with a classical approach, whose results are presented for an actual case study. It is shown that the proposed method is more suitable to extract meaningful information for rainfall fields tracking and studying
