Abstract :
It is proposed that advanced organization of information in long-term memory and the use of effective memory aids will significantly improve the performance of operators in cooperative management of a simulated naval command and control task. It is proposed that this is a result of reduced demands on working memory and increased access to correct and relevant information in decision making. The implications for this are discussed with respect to the design of interfaces to support such tasks and pilot trials are assessed for evidence of the significance of working memory in performance outcomes
