Abstract :
A low-cost carrier sense multiple access/collision detection (CSMA/CD) portable data system for indoor applications is presented. An adaptive forward error control coding scheme using Reed-Solomon (RS) codes is introduced to combat random and burst errors created by noise, interference, and fading occurring in an indoor wireless environment. It is indicated that an adaptive coding scheme is more appropriate to the varying and almost unpredicatable behavior of indoor wireless channels. The performance of the system was evaluated by both analysis and experiments. An experimental CSMA/CD portable data system using a newly developed programmable RS (31,K) codec (encoder/decoder) chip set is described. The use of the programmable RS (31,K) codec for data privacy is discussed
