Abstract :
A method for estimating the capacity of cellular networks taking both channel blocking and radio limitation into consideration is presented. The method applies to both analog and digital systems. The technique provides a simple, yet powerful basis to assess the capacity of different cellular configuration under varying propagation conditions. The US Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) adopted this technique for assessing the capacity gains that can be achieved by converting from AMPS to DAMPS (digital traffic AMPS for dual-mode standard IS-54 B). Further extensions such as the capacity improvement that can be achieved by using discontinuous transmission (DTX) are also discussed. A wide range of results for sectored configurations are presented
