Abstract :
This paper presents a comparative case study of eight telephones from European suppliers (UK and Germany) and Far Eastern suppliers (China and Malaysia) to establish their suitability for disassembly and recycling. Whilst the British, Chinese and Malaysian products are supplied to the UK market according to British national specifications, the German equipment adheres to the Deutsche Telekom requirements. The impact of design changes to improve end-of-life practices on manufacturing costs in Europe and the Pacific Rim has been examined. The opportunities for re-use, remanufacture and materials recycling have been identified such that the maximum of added value is retained
