Abstract :
Free-piston engines are investigated widely for their potential advantages in terms of fuel efficiency and exhaust emissions. The free-piston principle still has lots of design problems to be solved. Amongst them are the control of the free-piston. This paper describes the design of a hierarchical hybrid control system for a four-stroke free-piston engine developed for electric power generation. Special attentions are paid on the process control of the free-piston movement. The effectiveness of the designed control system is validated experimentally. Recent results from the prototype experiment are analyzed in detail.
