Abstract
This paper investigates the performance and optimization of dual mode AMPS/IS-136 TDMA cellular systems. The dual mode nature of IS-136 users is such that they may be assigned to AMPS channels in the event digital channels are blocked. Thus the two sets of users cannot be treated independently. We show that improved performance in a dual mode system can be achieved using knowledge of the percentage of population of dual mode mobile owners. Study results are instructive regarding the spectrum partition into analog and digital bandwidth sections given the population mix of dual and analog terminals
