Abstract :
Summary form only given. The scalar problem of electromagnetic wave scattering by metallic gratings of complex geometry in stratified media is considered. The paper treats the "stack" of two arbitrary positioned infinite discrete gratings as a model of several important physical problems. The mathematical algorithm is based on the pattern equation method. A few interesting physical results are obtained, concerned with wave reflection by gratings built up from resonators or cube-corner reflectors, grating excitation by gaussian beams, point sources etc. The present approach may be easily generalised to the case of multi-row gratings
