  • Abstract
In the light of a limited number of related studies, a new data processing method for increasing matching accuracy and reducing process time in fingerprint authentication using the fractional Fourier transform (FRT) was proposed being also taken into account protection of personal information. The new method was based on the minimization of error rate (MER) obtained from the false acceptance rate (FAR) and the false rejection rate (FRR). It was highlighted that making use of analyses on the peak value of the normalized cross-correlation function of the FRT intensity distributions was the key. By changing the extraction range and the order of FRT in each of the scanned lines of fingerprint images, feasibility was investigated. As a result, it was clarified that the data processed by the FRT provided higher matching accuracy than those processed by the conventional Fourier transform (FT). In addition, it was found that the matching accuracy was not strongly dependent on the data size extracted from original fingerprint images. This fact led to reduction of the matching time.
