Abstract
A general block differential method for estimating two-dimensional motion in video sequences is presented. A probabilistic interpretation is given, and other existing methods in the same category are generalized by the introduction of a parametric model to compute motion inside blocks as well as an explicit communication between disjoint blocks. The solution algorithm also generalizes other algorithms which formulate the estimation through a linearized version of the displaced pel difference. The method is applied to motion-compensated interpolation of a video sequence. Very good results are obtained for specific implementations of the general method. A heuristic block-splitting scheme used to enhance block estimation around moving boundaries is discussed
