Abstract
A spoken Chinese understanding system which accepts continuous speech and produces Lisp-executable functions is presented. A multiple-knowledge-source organization model, syntactic structure construction by forward-backward inference, a phoneme model of speech profiles, and knowledge-based tone classification are proposed and implemented in order to remove the uncertainty of speech signals. Experimental results are given and discussed. In the single-speaker mode, 90% of the test sentences were recognized as first proposition by the system. 3% were rejected, and the rest were given within the five propositions of best quality
