Abstract :
The breakdown of nonuniform field gaps in transformer oil was investigated under AC voltages. It was observed to occur either directly following the initiation of a discharge (direct mode) or after a succession of suppressions and reignitions of the discharge over several consecutive half-cycles of the applied voltage (delayed mode). The paper presents time-resolved observations of the discharge and offers an interpretation of its progression mechanism leading to breakdown of the gap
