Abstract
The author examines recent initiatives at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in the area of advanced space communications technologies and the role and utility of small satellites in supporting defense satellite communications needs. In particular, recent demonstrations of small satellites for tactical support applications are summarized. After a brief overview of the overall Advanced Space Technology Program, the author discusses the MACSAT (Multiple Access Communications Satellites) system and the Microsat system
