Abstract
It is noted that the needs of tactical communications users have expanded from the traditional modes of voice and data communications to include the capability for communication of visual images. Integration of digital video image processing with robust narrowband communication techniques in a user-friendly, tactical package provides the user the best of all worlds: reliable image, voice, and text (data) communications. The basic concept behind the Digital Video Imaging Transmission System is the conversion of live video into still video frames for storage, manipulation, and transmission. Examples of live video sources are camcorders, filmless cameras, and still video disk players. Harris is currently under contract to the US Army´s Communications Command (CECOM) to supply an electronic filmless camera system (EFCS) for the collection and communication of still video images. This program is discussed, and attention is given to communications, image handling, peripheral equipment, and applications
