Abstract
Microcosm is an open hypertext system designed to facilitate a resource-based approach to learning and teaching. In spite of winning accolades the system never established itself as a mainstream educational product. This paper describes the technical and pedagogical features of Microcosm, and attempts to explain the reason for its limited take up. The paper is in the form of a case-study of both good and questionable practice
