Abstract
An Intel 8096 single-chip-microcomputer (SCMC)-based system using a hierarchical structure has been developed. It consists of a master unit and slave units realized by the 8096 SCMCs. The master unit performs the primary function, and the slave units perform ancillary functions such as sampling and data preprocessing. It can be employed for different industrial applications with only a small change in the bus interconnections and the associated application software. The system developed is simple in logic structure, low in cost (which is very important in developing countries), and high in reliability. Basic principles, details of the logic structure, 8096-SCMC implementation of the developed system, and two applications in digital control and protection of power systems are described
