Abstract
Demand for wind power has been tremendously increasing, as a result of which large Wind Power Plants (WPPs) with hundreds of generating units are being installed producing substantial power. Therefore, it has now become important to analyze the short circuit behavior of Wind Turbine Generators (WTGs) when connected to the utility grid. The short circuit behavior depends not only on the type of WTGs used but also depends on the locations of fault. This paper documents some analysis and results that characterize the response of wind farms with Type 1 and Type 2 generators to faults on the grid. It also presents some discussion and observations that make equivalencing of such wind farms very easy. Simulation results from modeling of an actual wind farm on PSCAD/EMTDC® are presented to substantiate the theoretical discussion.
