  • Abstract
A system for synthesizing words using fuzzy splicing is presented. Digital electronic waveforms of isolated phonemes or extracted subword units are joined together in order to form new words. A model of concatenating waveforms using a fuzzy fuse function for forming a binding segment is introduced. An external board and host computer are interfaced via an RS-232C-compatible serial communications channel. Speech processing software includes real-time disk recording and playing of speech, ADPCM (adaptive differential pulse code modulation) to/from PCM decompression and compression, time-domain plotting, and selection of any portion of a speech waveform for playing, copying, cutting, pasting, extrapolating, and averaging. Results of quality assessment tests of new words formed by concatenating extracted subword units indicate 80% natural quality
