Abstract :
The evolution of handset technology is likely to present a range of multi-mode terminals in the future which, in turn, can support a range of services. However, at the current time few options for cordless/cellular handsets and services are available. The GSM/DECT has been the dominant multi-mode terminal technology to date. This paper highlighted the economic factors against GSM/DECT and those in favour of expanding GSM to support a cordless interface. The main benefit to the CTS solution is obviously the prediction that only a software change will be required to existing GSM handset designs to support cordless functionality. However, another main issue is the possibility of CTS compatibility emerging as the standard for all GSM handsets. The CTS, therefore, offers the chance deploy a cordless/cellular service based on existing technology and to exploit the economies of scale resulting from the high penetration of GSM
