Abstract :
Determining the velocity of mobiles is an important issue for hierarchical cellular networks since the efficient allocation of a mobile to macro or microcells depends on its present velocity. Layer selection methods in hierarchical cellular systems are motivated mainly to decrease the number of handover attempts in the micro layer and to increase channel utilization in the macro layer. We suggest a new method of estimating the velocity of mobiles by combining net power control. According to our simulation result, its performance is much better than the traditional threshold method. We also improve this algorithm by adjusting the threshold according to the load of the macrocell
