Abstract
A new formalism for modeling electromagnetic propagation on, and scattering from, planar microwave structures is presented. The new technique uses the Perfectly Matched Layer (PML) paradigm to construct an efficient Multilevel Fast Multipole Algorithm (MLFMA) for evaluating fields generated by electric current sources residing in a layered background medium. Depending on the nature of the microstrip metallization, the proposed scheme achieves a computational complexity of O(N) or O(N log2 N).
