Abstract :
A low-noise and broadband optical receiver is developed for 10-Gb/s communication systems. This receiver has a high transimpedance of 54 dB Omega and a broadband width of 15 GHz. It operates with an extremely low averaged equivalent input noise current of 7.0 pA/ square root Hz in the 0.5-8-GHz range. From the results of transmission experiments using a 10-Gb/s NRZ (nonreturn-to-zero) signal, a maximum optical sensitivity of -18.0 dBm at a bit error rate of 10/sup -9/ is obtained. The authors report the optical receiver design, the preamplifier performances, the high-frequency characteristics of the PIN photodiode, and the front-end receiver performances.<>
