Abstract
A class of modified version of the polynomial Wigner-Ville distribution (PWVD) called smoothed pseudo polynomial Wigner-Ville distribution (SP-PWVD) is presented by using a separable smoothing kernel in this paper. The new distribution achieves a better balance between the interference suppressing and resolution retaining than the PWVD, thus greatly improves the readability of the time frequency distribution. The SP-PWVD preserves some of the properties that characterize the PWVD, which are summarized in this paper. The higher order SP-PWVD may provide more accurate estimate of instantaneous frequency (IF) than the lower order SP-PWVD for higher order polynomial phase signals (PPS). The performance of the SP-PWVD is verified by simulations.
