Abstract :
An implantable electronic control and power (IECP) system for a totally implantable left ventricular assist system has been developed for long-term human use. The control and power system consists of a single-chip microprocessor that is interfaced to application-specific integrated circuits as well as to custom hybrid power circuits. The IECP controls the application of energy and the timing of a solenoid-driven pump that functionally replaces the recipient´s left heart. Synchronization of the assist pump to the left ventricle is obtained without physiologic transducers by use of control information detected within the pump itself.<>
