Abstract :
This paper discusses several fault protection methods for a notional future shipboard power system(SPS), highlighting their merits and drawbacks. Typical shipboard power systems have radial topologies and simplex structures, and the existing protective analysis of SPS is regardless of various operating modes. In this paper, the newly considered system is ladder-shaped with three typical operating modes, each mode has different topology. A software PSCAD/EMTDC is used to simulate the system and study it as a whole. Multiple protection methods are applied to it, particular attention is given to the selectivity of these protections. The paper is intended as a guide to aid designers in selecting adequate protection schemes for new systems, for evaluating existing systems, and for future researches on new protection schemes, to minimize fault damage. These topics are presented in two separate parts. Part 1 covers scope, introduction, the model simulation, and problems of the traditional protection gotten from simulation and experiment. Part 2 simulates and discusses multiple classical protecting methods as well as a newly designed adaptive protection, a conclusion is provided at the end of this paper.
