  • Abstract
Three dimensional finite element models provide an effective method to study the relationship between human scalp potentials and neural current sources in the brain. A three-concentric ellipsoids model of head is developed by means of standard computer packages PATRAN and ABAQUS. A convergence test of the model is carried out to show that numerical results converge to the exact solution as the model is refined. The finite element results are compared with those predicted by an analytic solution of a layered sphere to indicate model accuracy. Different patterns of potential distribution on the scalp are studied due to the different locations and orientations of dipole sources and conductive properties of the head.
