Abstract
In this paper, a new method is introduced for identifying helicopters and tanks via their acoustic signals. The wavelet packet algorithm is applied to the decomposition of the signal of an unknown target, and the optimal base number (OBN) of the signal is obtained by using the entropy function as the information cost function combined with wavelet packet theory. The position of the OBN with regard to a predetermined threshold is used to give the judgment as to whether the target is a helicopter or a tank. The method is proved to be very effective
