  • Abstract
May individuals in today´s society need mechanically-assisted, positive-pressure ventilation. A nocturnal, custom-fit nasal mask for a patient with postpolio syndrome was redesigned so that air was delivered to the patient without leaking. Since the patient´s ventilator, the LifeCare PLV-100, does not compensate for air leaks, the ventilator system automatically shuts down when leaks occur. Consequently, the need for a nasal mask that is comfortable, small, and ´leak free´ is crucial for a patient on this type of ventilator. By changing the shape and size of the old nasal mask, the new nasal mask will be designed to deliver air without leaking. The new mask has a hard acrylic cover and a inner silicon lining.
