Abstract :
The HVDC sending end may operate in islanded mode as a result of deliberate design, faults or maintenance of electric transmission lines. In that case the unbalanced power during and after faults may cause rotating over-speed for lack of reliance on a main AC system. A coordinated control based on the AC/DC control mechanism for the islanded hydro-electric HVDC sending system is developed in this paper with HVDC power modulation to form an additional control strategy. The parameters of the coordinated controller are optimized by a developed PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) intelligent algorithm. The effectiveness under mono-polar blocking condition of the additional control strategy is simulated by an islanded hydro-electric with HVDC sending model in PSCAD/EMTDC.
