Abstract
Most prototype local multipoint distribution service (LMDS) systems utilize some form of Reed-Solomon, Viterbi, or concatenated forward error correction (FEC) solution. Turbo product codes (TPCs) give superior performance, and are well suited to solve the FEC challenges of LMDS. Performance increases in the bandwidth efficiency and signal to noise power can address LMDS issues such as rain fade, number of users per cell, and cell sizes. This paper compares TPC with traditional error correction schemes. FEC performance within system level constraints such as packet size and modulation type is analyzed
