Abstract
Empirical research in the area of computer support of groups is characterized by inconsistent results across studies and a lack of theoretical foundation. The authors argue for theory-based research as a means to progress in the area. They reconstruct the common assumptions implicit in previous studies and establish the links between the assumptions and existing theories relevant to the groups. The authors also present other, more specific, theoretical models. A framework is proposed that helps in the selection of different theoretical models for studies on computer support of groups
