  • Abstract
A method to construct a secure and trusted time stamping authority is proposed to provide adequate precision and protection for digital time stamping of electronic digital documents. Time for stamping is obtained from a precise clock that is synchronous to two atomic clocks. A digital signature is obtained by using the RSA cryptosystem with 2048-bit modulus, and a secret key of a time stamping authority is stored at distributed servers partially. A ticket is used for screening illegal use. These features are crucial for operating a secure and trusted time stamping authority. A time stamping authority provides a “proof-of-existence” for digital documents at an instant in time. In electronic commerce a “proof-of-existence” is useful for preventing from forging transactions
