  • Abstract
Describes efforts to spatially map and characterize surfactants in the sea surface microlayer using fluorescence and mass spectrometry. A microlayer sampler coupled with a fluorometry package provides real-time information on slick spatial distributions. Mass spectrometric analyses of slick surfactants show that variations in slick chemical composition strongly impact surface elasticity of the air-sea interface. Prospects for more detailed near real-time chemical measurements of slicks using an ion trap mass spectrometer are explored
