Abstract :
Losses in power electronic switches can be reduced by using nonlinear voltage-dependent capacitors as turn-off snubbers. It has been discovered that distinct voltage-dependent events occur in the dielectric of the capacitors when placed under voltage stress. The authors discuss the use of this phenomenon as a possible criterion for selecting capacitors from components mass-produced for the consumer market. The selected capacitors are then tested in situ in power electronic switches up to frequencies of 30 kHz, and it is found that the capacitors have thus far operated reliably as snubbers.<>
