Abstract :
The authors provide a description of the first fully operational, GPS/Loran-based vessel monitoring system. Its monitoring workstation, communications solutions, and onboard navigation systems provide an integrated capability for the marine fleet operator. The system is a powerful tool for the fleet operator in such applications as shipping, scheduling, harbor operations, and route verification. Moreover, this concept can be applied to the larger problem of safe transport of hazardous cargo
