Abstract
Like every other utility, line crews at Hydro Quebec find reclosing on distribution transformers both time consuming and potentially dangerous. Hydro Quebec looked for practical, cost effective solutions to identify faulted distribution transformers to help mitigate the risk of accidents and increase the operational efficiency of the line crews. One solution, a sensor calibrated to respond only to pressure changes due to faults was located. This sensor provides an indicator that lets the line crews know the transformer should be replaced. After further technical and financial analysis, Hydro Quebec has implemented this technology and achieved a higher ROI than initially anticipated.
